5 Ways to Kickstart your Job Search

Have you found your mind wandering over the festive break, thinking about what lies ahead for you jobwise this year? It’s normal to reflect and take stock of where you are when you start a new year. But if you’re unhappy with your current role, then it might be time for new beginnings of the career kind and to start looking for opportunities. We share five ways to help kickstart your job search, so you can look forward to a new and exciting role in 2022.

1. What do you want to do?

Okay, so this might be a tough question for many of you! Sometimes it’s hard to decide on the types of job roles you should go for, especially when you’re multiskilled and/or have experience in a few areas. Start with what you like doing at work; make a list of all the things you enjoy. Be realistic because it’s rare to find a job where you enjoy every single task or responsibility. But this will give you a good indication of the type of job that’s right for you.

2. Why do you want to do this type of job?

If you’ve made your list as above, then you’ll already know why you’re looking at specific job roles. But if you’re still drawn to certain roles and you’re unsure why, then dig a bit deeper, download the job descriptions and check what’s actually involved. Sometimes a job sounds great in theory, but in reality, it can be a very different picture. And some roles look good on paper, but there can be hidden requirements. Always seek expert advice before you apply.

3. What skills and experience do you need?

Once you’ve gained a good understanding of a job description, then you’ll need to check if you have a suitable background. Compare your current skill set and experience with the role requirements. If you find that you’re missing a few essential skills, try not to be put off as you may be able to upskill through a training course. Some employers offer onsite training too. But it’s also good to stay realistic, as this will help you manage your expectations.

4. Where do you want to work and why?

You may already have a good idea about which company you’d like to work for and why. For example, if you’re a motorcycle enthusiast, your dream job might be working for the UK’s leading manufacturer assembling bikes. So, you would do your research online and contact their preferred recruitment agency to see if you can apply for an advertised role. But if you’re unsure of the exact business, start by researching the industry sector to see what comes up.

5. Who do you know who might be able to help?
Networking means making “networks” of useful people you can contact when you want to find out more about a job. These could be current or past colleagues, friends or family members. For example, you may know someone who’s working in a company that you would like to work for and who can give you advice. They might be able to give you the lowdown on what’s involved for different types of jobs within that business or the sector itself.

Of course, most people don’t have a handy contact they can speak to when it comes to finding a role in a particular company. And this is why speaking to a professional recruiter, who has built trusted relationships with certain companies, can give you the advantage over other job hunters. We often have temporary and permanent vacancies that cannot be found elsewhere. So always talk to our team and send us your CV in the first instance.
