Jobhunter’s Checklist for 2023 | Hiring Strategies Limited

Jobhunter’s Checklist for 20

Are you under pressure to get a better job? Maybe you’re fed up with your current role and you need a career change? Our jobhunter’s checklist looks at what you need to know, so you can find the right role in 2023.

  1. Do some job research
Research job vacancies, companies and industries that appeal to you. Think about why you’re attracted to a particular role or sector. Download and compare job descriptions. Do you have relevant skills and experience for the job roles you’re looking at? Consider any transferable skills you could use in different sectors.

  2. Shortlist vacancies
Create a shortlist of all the jobs you have found and alongside each one, note how your skills and experience match the job description. Remember, there’s rarely a ‘perfect job’ - there’s usually a task people aren’t so keen on doing. Think practically and always compare the pros and cons, so you’re fully aware of your responsibilities.

  3. Update your CV
When you start applying for jobs, it’s important to make sure that your CV reflects
the role requirements, as well as demonstrating your ability to do the role. You might have gained new skills and experience since you last updated your CV. Looking at lots of different roles? Create a different version of your CV to match each job.

  4. Complete job applications
Whether it’s an online application or you need to email a cover letter with your CV to a prospective employer, make sure you keep your responses as relevant as possible. How do your skills and experience meet the job description? Make sure you include examples of how you can add extra value to the role, including real-life scenarios.

  5. Get ready for interview
Before you face a potential employer, you need to think about how you will make the right impression. Consider the different types of questions that you might be asked. Practise the interview in advance; you could carry out a mock interview with a friend. For interview skills, read our previous blog, Our 10 Tips for Successful Interview.

  6. Follow up afterwards
Have you applied for a job or reached the interview stage, but you haven’t heard back? Get in touch with potential employers to find out what’s happened. By showing interest, you will prove that you’re keen and eager to get the job. If you haven’t been successful, ask them for feedback as this will help you to refine your approach.

  7. Use a recruitment agency
The easiest way to find a new job is to use a professional recruitment agency. At Hiring Strategies, you will be given full support and advice to help you find the right role for you. We’ll look at your skills, experience and abilities to match you to suitable opportunities. Our clients include major employers across the Midlands.
