Finding Work After Your Summer Holiday

Finding Work After Your Summer Holiday

At this time of year, many students are heading back to school, college or university. For some this also means looking for a part-time job. Finding work after your summer holiday might be needed to pay for your studies, living costs, or to support your lifestyle.

The good news is that many businesses actively look for extra staff at this time of year, especially logistics, hospitality and the retail sectors. Stores prepare months in advance for the festive season with stock being stored in warehouses across the UK.

What kind of job can you do?
Look at any previous work experience you have and think about the skills you have developed. Any experience you have acquired needs to be on your CV, listed in date order with the most recent job at the top.

Also think about your abilities and attitude. Are you a people person or would you rather stay behind the scenes? Do you like working as part of a team or prefer working solo? Your personality and personal preferences hold the key to finding the right job while you study.

Suitable jobs when studying
If you are a sociable person and like meeting people, then you could look at a hospitality role. Many hotels and restaurants get busier during the festive season, so you could consider working as a waiter or bartender.

If you prefer an office-based role, it’s worth looking at part-time customer service work. Companies usually provide full training, and you could learn some valuable skills. Customer service jobs often provide graduates with the opportunity to get into specific industries.

If you’re physically fit and don’t want to work in a bar, restaurant or office, you could consider warehouse roles. You don’t usually need any experience and full training is often provided. The great thing about this type of job is that it’s also usually available in different shift patterns. So you should be able to find a role that fits in with your studies.

How to apply for a job
When you apply for any type of job, you need to be honest about your skills and experience. Never embellish aspects of your CV, as you will be caught out as soon as you start your new job. Also, think about how the job will fit in with your studies to find a shift pattern that won’t impact on your learning time.

Once you have updated your CV, research different roles online and look carefully at the job description. Remember, there’s rarely a job where you will like every single task! But you do need to be comfortable doing most of the tasks required. Every job is a chance for you to gain valuable experience for when you finish your studies.
